Cheese is BACK!!!

Posted by emily on June 27, 2010

Before I became a vegan, I was a serious cheese lover.  I could stuff an entire block of Monterey Jack in my face every night and not blink an eye.  So I didn’t even try to replace cheese in my new vegan diet because I knew nothing could come close.  Sure, I tried soy cheese and rice cheese, both of which I found completely disgusting.  Then I tried making my own with cashews or nutritional yeast, both yummy but not so great on a pizza, if you know what I mean.  I wanted something that melts, that stretches, that SMELLS like cheese but without the soy nastiness.  Alas, I have found it.

Daiya Foods has come up with the most amazing soy-free, dairy-free cheese that smells like buttered popcorn and has the feel of grated cheddar.  This stuff has revolutionized our meals -- we’ve made pizza, fajitas, and grilled cheese sandwiches, and that was only the first day since we found this great product!  And the best part is it doesn’t leave your tummy feeling odd like a lot of imitation products do.  I adore Tofurky loaf but I always have to allow for a day afterwards to stay home with a weird grumbly feeling.  It comes in two flavors -- cheddar and mozza -- but I’m hoping they come up with a feta version sometime.

So please check these guys out -- I found them at my Whole Foods for $4.39 a bag.  Since it melts so beautifully, you don’t need as much as you might with soy cheese.  I am sure it will change vegan lives everywhere!
