We had the privilege of attending the opening show of Toy Story 3 On Ice at the Pepsi Center last week and I had been curious to see how they would pull it off with all the big toys and the complicated scenes. Well they DID. Lifelike toys -- you almost forgot they were on skates -- and amazing images projected onto the ice (like a street scene when Woody is flying the kite away from the daycare), it was more than just a reenactment; it was a whole new sphere of entertainment.
My favorite act was the toy soldiers -- a few came parachuting onto the ice even! It was just so cool to see how each performer skated within character -- Barbie maintained a rigid posture the entire time and Ken had the signature bent elbows and plastic hair -- outstanding! And the scene where the children traumatize the toys at Sunnyside -- they had giant moving children made out of what appeared to be wood moving on the ice -- I had been wondering how they were going to do it... I gotta wonder who comes up with the "On Ice" version of these shows -- genius!
Please stay tuned to my blog for announcements of future shows -- a lot of great ones coming up!
